FAQ

Does the person need WhatsApp installed?

The wa.me link opens the app when it is installed and WhatsApp Web otherwise, so the chat starts either way.

Which number should I encode?

The full international number without spaces or dashes — the same one your WhatsApp account is registered to. Business and personal accounts both work.

Will people see my number before writing?

Yes, the chat opens with your number visible, like any WhatsApp conversation. The person writes the first message; nothing is sent for them.

WhatsApp QR code links, app behaviour and limits

Capacity and limits

The code carries a wa.me link built from your number, so the payload is short and the pattern stays sparse. A prefilled message can be appended to the link, and that text is what adds density if you make it long.

Device compatibility

With WhatsApp installed the chat opens immediately on both iOS and Android; without it the link falls through to WhatsApp Web in the browser. Business and personal accounts behave identically. The first message is always written by the person scanning.

Common mistakes

  • Encoding the number in local format — wa.me needs the full international number, without spaces, plus signs or dashes.
  • Using a number that is registered to a different account than the one your team monitors, so scans arrive nowhere.
  • Assuming the chat is private branding: your number is visible to everyone who scans, exactly as in any WhatsApp conversation.

Printing and placement

Shop windows and vehicle graphics are the usual placements, and both are read from one to three metres. Match the width to that distance, and avoid printing over a busy photograph where the pattern loses contrast.
