MeCard packs the same core contact details into noticeably fewer bytes than vCard, which is the whole reason to choose it: a lighter pattern that survives being printed small. The trade-off is a smaller field set, so structured addresses and extended detail do not travel.

Device compatibility

Android scanners and current iPhone cameras recognise the format and offer to save the contact. Support thins out on older devices and in some desktop address books, which understand vCard but not MeCard — if your audience imports contacts on a computer, vCard is the safer choice.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing MeCard for its size when the payload was never near the limit, giving up compatibility for nothing.
  • Expecting fields the format does not carry, such as a structured postal address, to appear in the saved contact.
