Capacity and limits

An SVG stores the modules as vector shapes, so file size follows the number of modules rather than the output dimensions. The same code exports identically for a business card and for a building wrap, and enlarging it costs nothing in quality.

Device compatibility

Illustrator, Figma, Inkscape, InDesign and every current browser open the file directly. Some older print workflows prefer outlined vectors or a high-resolution raster; if a supplier asks, export a PNG at the size they specify instead of arguing the point.

Common mistakes

  • Rescaling a raster export when an SVG was available, which is what produces the soft edges that scanners struggle with.
  • Applying a drop shadow or transparency effect in the design tool that flattens into a grey halo at print.
  • Recolouring the modules to a light tint against white and losing the contrast the scanner depends on.

Printing and placement

Vector output removes size as a quality problem but not as a scanning one: the printed width still needs to match the reading distance. Keep the code as a placed vector to the end of the layout rather than flattening it early.
